Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni Re-Elected for Seventh Term
President Yoweri Museveni, 81, has been declared the winner of Uganda’s presidential election, securing 71.65 percent of the vote, according to the country’s electoral commission. The results were announced on Saturday.
Museveni defeated his main challenger, Bobi Wine, a 43-year-old politician, who received 24.72 percent of the vote. Museveni has been in power since 1986 and has been re-elected for a seventh term.
The election campaign was marked by controversy, with the United Nations describing it as “widespread repression and intimidation”. A nationwide internet blackout also took place on election day, which drew criticism from observers.
Bobi Wine had claimed on social media that there was “massive ballot stuffing” during the election. He later stated that he had escaped a police and army raid on his house, where his wife and other family members remain under house arrest. Museveni has been accused of overseeing a crackdown on his political opponents over the years.
The electoral commission’s results confirm Museveni’s expected victory, with him receiving approximately 71.65 percent of the vote. The official results will be finalized after any necessary recounts or appeals.
