Ugandas Wine faces allegations of escaping during disputed presidential election

Ugandan Opposition Leader Claims Escape from Police and Army Raid

Uganda’s opposition leader Bobi Wine has confirmed that he escaped a police and army raid on his home, which was reportedly carried out by security forces. The incident occurred as veteran President Yoweri Museveni is expected to secure an overwhelming victory in the presidential election.

According to Wine, who posted about the incident on X, he managed to escape from the raid and is currently not at home. His wife and other family members remain under house arrest, according to his post. The military has denied allegations that they were involved in Wine’s alleged abduction.

Wine had previously stated that security forces had placed him under house arrest, which was later confirmed by his party. However, the military rejected this claim. Wine challenged Museveni in the election campaign, which was marred by reports of widespread repression and intimidation.

In a post on X, Wine reiterated his “COMPLETE REJECTION” of the results being announced by the head of Uganda’s election body, Simon Byabakama, alleging ballot stuffing and detention of other leaders from his party. He also demanded that the government end its internet shutdown and release true district vote tallies to ensure transparency.

As of Saturday morning, Museveni had won nearly 72% of votes, with over nine-tenths of polling stations counted, while Wine trailed behind with 24%, according to the electoral commission. The election is seen as a test of Museveni’s political strength.
