UK and France deploy naval assets to Cyprus following drone incident

UK Deploys Warship and Helicopters to Cyprus Amid Ongoing Tensions

The British government has announced plans to deploy a warship and helicopters to Cyprus in response to a recent drone attack on the country’s military base. The HMS Dragon, a Type-45 air defence destroyer, will be joined by two Wildcat helicopters as part of an effort to bolster drone defense for Cypriot partners.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the deployment is aimed at providing additional security measures in light of ongoing tensions in the region. French President Emmanuel Macron has also announced plans to deploy his country’s nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, the Charles de Gaulle, to the Mediterranean.

The situation escalated after a surprise Iranian-made drone attack targeted the Royal Air Force base of Akrotiri on Monday, causing minor damage and prompting the evacuation of approximately 1,000 residents. The incident is part of a broader conflict involving Iran, the US, and Israel, which has resulted in significant loss of life across Iran.

The British government has stated that it is committed to supporting its allies in the region, while France has expressed its support for Cyprus through the deployment of additional air defense assets.
