UK Approves Chinese Embassy in London Amid Security and Protest Concerns

British Government Approves China’s Plans for Largest Embassy in Europe

The British government has granted planning permission for China to build its largest embassy in Europe on a site near the Tower of London. The decision was made by Housing Minister Steve Reed, who announced it on Tuesday. This comes eight years after Beijing purchased the Royal Mint Court, where the new embassy is planned.

The approval follows a three-year delay due to opposition from residents, lawmakers, and Hong Kong pro-democracy campaigners. They had expressed concerns that the embassy could be used for spying or harassment of political opponents. US politicians have also warned against allowing China to build the embassy on the site.

China’s plans were initially rejected by the local council in 2022 over safety and security concerns. However, after repeated requests from Chinese President Xi Jinping, Starmer’s government had postponed its decision multiple times. In November, MI5 issued an alert warning of targeted recruitment efforts by Chinese agents.

The government has stated that intelligence agencies have developed measures to manage any risks associated with the new embassy. Security Minister Dan Jarvis said that China continues to pose national security threats but assured that the UK’s security is protected. The decision is now final, barring a successful court challenge from residents who plan to contest it.
