UK Government Expresses Concern Over Abuse Allegations Against West Ham Co-Owner

West Ham Football Club’s Co-Owner David Sullivan Steps Down as Joint Chair Amid Allegations

David Sullivan, the billionaire co-owner of West Ham football club, has resigned as joint chair of the London-based team. The decision comes amid allegations that Sullivan is accused of making unwanted advances towards women in his personal life. Seven women have come forward claiming that Sullivan preyed on young or aspiring models in their late teens or early 20s during the 1980s and 1990s, when he owned British tabloid newspapers.

The UK’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport has stated that the allegations must be treated with seriousness and investigated by relevant authorities. The Metropolitan Police are also investigating a report related to alleged indecent image taking and sexual exploitation in London and Essex during the same period.

Sullivan denies all claims made against him, stating that “false allegations” have been sensationalized by the media. He cited his experience in the adult industry as evidence of his ability to meet many women over the years, but maintains he has done nothing wrong.

The club’s owners, Sullivan and business partner David Gold, took control of West Ham after selling Birmingham City. The trio also brought Karren Brady on board as vice-chairman. The allegations have sparked concerns about Sullivan’s suitability as a director, with England’s Independent Football Regulator (IFR) contacting the club to seek information.

The BBC is investigating allegations that Tony Livesey, former editor-in-chief of Daily Sport and Sunday Sport, facilitated a meeting between Sullivan and one of his accusers. Livesey has denied the claims and asked to step back from presenting his radio show for a short period.
