British Prime Minister Keir Starmer met with Health Secretary Wes Streeting on Wednesday, amid a tumultuous period for the government. The meeting, which lasted less than 20 minutes, was seen as a brief encounter between two potential leadership rivals.
Starmer has faced mounting pressure from his own MPs, who have called for his resignation over heavy losses in local elections and perceived failures to deliver reforms since taking office in 2024. As of Wednesday, more than 80% of the prime minister’s elected MPs had expressed support for Starmer’s departure.
In a statement on Tuesday evening, Starmer emphasized the need for the government to press ahead with its plans to reform the country, citing the importance of addressing issues such as the cost of living, hospital waiting lists, and national security. The government has announced a package of over 35 bills and draft bills aimed at improving the economy, strengthening national security, and reforming the state.
Following the meeting with Streeting, an ally of Starmer’s, Europe minister Nick Thomas-Symonds stated that no candidate had secured enough backing from MPs to trigger a challenge. The situation remains uncertain, with King Charles set to deliver a speech at the opening of parliament on Wednesday, which will outline the government’s legislative agenda for the year ahead.
Starmer is expected to participate in the grand ceremony, despite the turmoil surrounding his leadership. His successor would not be bound by the same plan if he were to be removed from office, adding to the uncertainty surrounding his future as prime minister.
