Labour Party Leadership Controversy: Starmer’s Future Uncertain
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing increasing pressure amid a tumultuous local election result for the Labour Party last week. The party suffered a calamitous defeat, with many Labour MPs urging Starmer to resign due to controversy surrounding his appointment of Peter Mandelson as UK ambassador to Washington and slow-moving domestic policy changes.
More than 80 MPs have called for Starmer’s resignation, while four junior ministers have stepped down. In response, some Labour figures are rallying behind Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, who is being considered as a potential challenger to Starmer.
Wes Streeting, a key rival of Starmer, has publicly backed Burnham, stating that he believes Burnham is one of the best options for challenging Starmer. Burnham would need to be elected in a special by-election in Makerfield, northwest England, after Labour lawmaker Josh Simons resigned from his seat earlier this week.
The Labour Party’s deputy leader, Lucy Powell, has expressed support for Burnham’s bid, while the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers has endorsed his candidacy. However, the path to challenging Starmer is not straightforward, as the party’s National Executive Committee must first decide whether Burnham can stand in the by-election.
A decision on this matter is expected in the coming days, with an election potentially taking place in June. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has pledged to contest the by-election, and any challenger would need to gather support from 81 Labour MPs or 20% of the party in Parliament to launch a challenge against Starmer.
