Russia’s War on Ukraine Enters Fourth Year: A Look at the Human Toll
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has entered its fourth year, with significant human costs. The war is estimated to have caused approximately two million military casualties in all, with varying numbers reported by both sides. According to the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), Russia has suffered an estimated 1.2 million casualties, including at least 325,000 deaths.
Ukraine’s General Staff estimates that around 418,000 Russian troops were killed or wounded last year alone, bringing the total number of Russian casualties to just over 1.25 million. Ukraine also reports significant civilian losses, with the United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine (HRMMU) estimating 15,168 Ukrainian civilians have been killed and 41,534 wounded during four years of full-scale war.
The conflict has had a profound impact on the global economy, with Moscow facing unprecedented sanctions. The CSIS notes that Russia’s casualties are extraordinary, with no major power suffering such numbers in any war since World War II.
In addition to military and civilian losses, Ukraine has also experienced significant demographic changes. The country has lost about a quarter of its pre-war population, with around 5 million people living under Russian occupation. An estimated 5.9 million Ukrainians have left the country, with many seeking refuge in Europe.
The conflict has also had a devastating impact on children, with thousands being abducted from occupied territories and taken to Russia for re-education as Russians. The Yale School of Medicine estimates that over 19,000 abductees remain unaccounted for, with only around 1,238 having been returned.
