Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy Arrives in Jordan for Defense Talks
Jordan has received Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who is on a visit to bolster defense ties with the country and its Gulf neighbors. The meeting marks a significant development in Ukraine’s efforts to secure support from regional powers amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.
Zelenskyy announced his arrival on social media, stating that an “important meeting” would take place. He emphasized the importance of security, saying that all partners must make necessary efforts to prioritize it.
The Ukrainian president has been seeking cooperation from Gulf states in recent months, as Ukraine continues to face significant challenges due to the Russia-Ukraine war. The conflict, which began over four years ago, has left Kyiv struggling to cover its budget deficit and fund domestic weapons production.
In response to the ongoing conflict, Ukraine has intensified retaliatory attacks on Russian infrastructure, including refineries, oil depots, and ports. On Sunday, a drone strike was reported to have triggered a fire at Russia’s Baltic port of Ust-Luga, although there were no casualties from the attack.
Ukraine has agreed to cooperate with Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates on defense matters. The country has also deployed its anti-drone experts to these countries, which are also being targeted by Iranian drones used in attacks on their infrastructure.
Zelenskyy’s visit comes as Ukraine seeks to strengthen its defenses against Russian drone attacks. The Ukrainian team is reportedly present in Jordan, although details of the meeting remain unclear.
