UN Chief Warns of Global Supremacy of Force Over Human Rights

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has emphasized the need for international cooperation in protecting human rights. In a statement at the opening of the UN Human Rights Council’s annual session, he highlighted “blatant violations of human rights, human dignity, and international law” in various parts of the world.

Guterres noted that these violations are not isolated incidents but rather a widespread trend. He stated that “the rule of law is being outmuscled by the rule of force,” indicating that power and force are often prioritized over established laws and regulations.

Specifically, Guterres expressed concern about the situation in Palestine, where he described the trajectory as “stark, clear, and purposeful.” He also mentioned Russia’s war in Ukraine, which has resulted in the deaths of over 15,000 civilians in four years of violence.

Guterres emphasized that the international community must take action to prevent further human rights abuses. He stated that “human rights are under a full-scale attack around the world” and called for collective efforts to protect these rights.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk echoed Guterres’ concerns, highlighting the need for global cooperation to address the growing trend of domination and supremacy. Turk noted that the use of force is becoming increasingly normalized, and that mass civilian suffering is unfolding in various parts of the world.

The UN Secretary-General’s statement serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding international law and protecting human rights globally.
