UN reports over 1,000 Mediterranean migrant deaths expected by 2026

Mediterranean Shipwrecks Claim Over 180 Lives in Past Week

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has reported a significant increase in maritime incidents in the Mediterranean, resulting in at least 181 deaths or missing persons over the past week. According to the IOM, this brings the total number of fatalities since January 2026 to nearly 1,000.

As of Tuesday, the IOM stated that approximately 765 people had lost their lives in the Central Mediterranean region so far this year, exceeding last year’s total by more than 460. The organization also reported that at least 990 deaths have been recorded across the entire Mediterranean region in 2026, making it one of the deadliest starts to a year since data collection began in 2014.

Five separate shipwrecks occurred between March 28 and Sunday, resulting in the loss of life for more than 80 migrants who went missing when their boat capsized due to rough weather in the Central Mediterranean. The incident involved a vessel departing from Tajoura in Libya, with approximately 120 people on board. Thirty-two survivors were rescued by a merchant vessel and a tugboat, while two bodies were recovered.

The IOM has expressed concern over the ongoing situation, stating that “these tragedies show once again that far too many people are still risking their lives on dangerous routes.” The organization is calling for stronger efforts to stop traffickers and smugglers from exploiting vulnerable individuals and to expand safe and regular pathways.
