UN Secretary-General Albanese receives support from over 100 artists for Palestine

UN Special Rapporteur for Occupied Palestinian Territory Faces International Calls to Step Down

A group of prominent artists has signed an open letter in support of Francesca Albanese, the United Nations special rapporteur for occupied Palestinian territory. The signatories include musicians, actors, and writers who have expressed their backing for Albanese, a defender of human rights.

Albanese has been criticized by European countries, including France and Germany, over her comments on Israel’s actions in Gaza. A fake video was later debunked that appeared to show Albanese making anti-Semitic remarks, but she clarified that she was actually referencing the system that enables genocide in Palestine as the “common enemy”.

French lawmakers have condemned Albanese’s remarks as “anti-Semitic”, while German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has called her position “untenable”. French President Emmanuel Macron and Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot have also expressed support for international law, despite criticism from some quarters.

A spokesperson for the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights stated that officials are “very worried” about the backlash against Albanese. The situation highlights concerns over personal attacks, threats, and misinformation that can distract from serious human rights issues.

According to reports, nearly 600 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since an October 10 ceasefire, with at least 72,000 Palestinians killed and 171,000 wounded in Israel’s war since October 2023. The situation remains a subject of international concern.
