UN Security Council Adopts Resolution Condemning Iran’s Attacks on Gulf Nations
The United Nations Security Council adopted a draft resolution condemning Iran’s attacks on Gulf nations and Jordan, with 13 of the 15 members voting in favor. The resolution, sponsored by the Gulf Cooperation Council and cosponsored by 135 other UN member states, demands that Iran immediately halt hostilities.
China and Russia abstained from the vote but did not use their veto power to block the resolution. The resolution also condemns Iran’s targeting of infrastructure such as ports and energy facilities in the Gulf region.
Iran’s UN Ambassador Amir-Saeid Iravani addressed the Council after the vote, expressing “profound regret” at its adoption. He stated that the resolution is a “manifest injustice against my country” and accused the US and Israel of being behind it.
Russia’s ambassador to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, abstained from the vote due to concerns over the resolution’s balance. China’s ambassador to the UN, Zhang Jun, stated that the conflict has “neither legitimacy nor legal basis” and called for an end to military action in the Middle East.
The adopted resolution is now part of international law, but its implementation remains uncertain. The US and Israel have been accused of launching a war against Iran, resulting in significant civilian casualties and damage to infrastructure. The situation continues to unfold as the international community waits to see how Iran will respond to the resolution.
In related news, the Security Council also failed to pass a draft resolution put forward by Moscow that called on all sides to cease military action in the Middle East.
