UN urged by Gulf states to enhance security in the Strait of Hormuz

United Nations Security Council Drafts Resolution Demanding Iran’s Cooperation

A group of Gulf states has submitted a draft United Nations Security Council resolution to address ongoing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. The proposed resolution calls for Iran to halt attacks on ships, disclose the location of all mines, and ensure humanitarian aid passage through the strait.

The resolution, co-drafted by Qatar, Bahrain, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the United States, aims to restore pre-war traffic levels in the narrow waterway. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical shipping route that accounts for approximately 20% of global energy exports during peacetime.

According to diplomats from the Gulf states, the current situation poses significant risks to global economic stability, energy security, and humanitarian crises. They emphasize that the strait’s free navigation is a fundamental principle enshrined in international law.

The resolution demands that Iran “immediately participate in and enable” UN efforts to establish a humanitarian corridor in the strait for the delivery of vital aid, fertilizers, and other essential goods. The draft also rejects the imposition of illegal tolls and interference with freedom of navigation and lawful transit passage.

Iran’s Foreign Minister has stated that navigation will return to normal if the war ends and sanctions against his country are lifted. However, diplomats from the Gulf states argue that Iran’s actions have worsened the situation, citing the use of force and attacks on neighboring countries.

The draft resolution is set to be discussed further by the UN Security Council.
