UN urged by Gulf states to take action on Strait of Hormuz security

United Nations Security Council Drafts Resolution Demanding Iran’s Cooperation

A group of Gulf states, including Qatar, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates, has submitted a draft resolution to the United Nations Security Council, calling for Iran to halt its attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz, disclose the location of all mines, and ensure humanitarian aid passage through the waterway. The resolution also demands that Iran immediately participate in and enable UN efforts to establish a humanitarian corridor in the strait.

The draft resolution, co-drafted with Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the United States, emphasizes the importance of resuming pre-war traffic levels in the Strait of Hormuz, which is a critical waterway for global energy exports. The Gulf states stress that ensuring the strait remains open is a shared international responsibility, as outlined in UN conventions.

The resolution also rejects Iran’s imposition of “illegal tolls” and demands the removal of sea mines placed in and around the Strait of Hormuz. It supports the establishment of a humanitarian corridor to facilitate the movement of aid, fertiliser, and other essential goods through the strait.

Iran’s Foreign Minister has stated that navigation will return to normal in the strait if the war ends and the blockade, as well as sanctions against his country, are lifted. The US envoy to the UN has condemned reports that Iran is launching a Persian Gulf Straits Authority, which would impose tolls on ships crossing the waterway.

The draft resolution is set forth by the clear principle of freedom of navigation in accordance with international law. The United Nations Security Council will consider the proposal and may take further action if necessary.
