Syria Reaches Ceasefire Agreement with Kurdish Forces
A ceasefire agreement was announced by Syria’s government on Sunday as part of its plan to unify the country following a 14-year civil war. Under the agreement, the government will take control of land currently held by the Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The SDF has reported ongoing gun battles in the country, particularly around a prison holding ISIL members in the town of al-Shadadi.
As part of the deal, Syria’s army will assume control of three eastern and northeastern provinces: Raqqa, Deir Az Zor, and Hasakah. Government-affiliated forces have already arrived on the outskirts of the Kurdish-led city of Hasakah. The SDF is set to be integrated into Syria’s defence and interior ministries as part of a broader 14-point agreement.
The agreement marks an important step in Syria’s efforts to reunify following the ousting of former President Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. On Friday, President Ahmed al-Sharaa issued a decree declaring Kurdish a “national language” and granting the minority group official recognition.
The Kurds are an ethnic group present across several countries in the Middle East, including Syria, Turkey, Iraq, Iran, and Armenia. They have a shared culture and language, with over 30-40 million people worldwide. The Kurds do not have a state of their own and have experienced repression and unfair treatment in various countries.
Historically, the Ottoman Empire took control of Kurdish-held territory in the 1500s, leading to the loss of lands for the Kurdish population. Since then, the Kurds have repeatedly attempted to establish their own state, but efforts have been unsuccessful. The SDF represents the struggle of the Kurdish people and has played a significant role in Syria’s civil war.
The agreement brings an end to the SDF’s control over certain areas, with President al-Sharaa stating that “what [we] are witnessing now is the end of the SDF.”
