Understanding US Military Terms in the Iran Conflict Situation

US Deploys Additional Military Personnel to Middle East

The United States has deployed thousands of additional Marines and airborne troops to the Middle East since the Iran conflict began. The US military is continuing to expand its presence in the region, with new deployments announced on Tuesday.

As part of “Operation Epic Fury”, a joint US-Israeli air campaign targeting Iranian military and nuclear infrastructure, strikes have continued for over four weeks across Iran, resulting in significant casualties. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has confirmed that a third aircraft carrier, the USS George HW Bush, has been deployed to join two existing carrier groups in the region.

The USS Abraham Lincoln is currently launching daily combat sorties against Iranian targets, while the USS George HW Bush is en route and expected to eventually replace the USS Gerald Ford, which has been on an extended deployment in the Mediterranean. In addition, an Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) has arrived in the Middle East, carrying US Marines and equipment for landing operations.

The military has also deployed a Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), consisting of 2,200 personnel from the United States Marine Corps, which is capable of conducting sea-based combat and humanitarian missions. Two additional MEUs are inbound, with approximately 2,500 Marines expected to arrive in mid-April.

In total, the US military has deployed over 50,000 troops to the Middle East, with an additional 2,000 soldiers from the US Army’s 82nd Airborne Division also being moved to the region. The deployments are part of a broader effort to expand the US military presence in the region.

The USS George HW Bush is expected to eventually replace the USS Gerald Ford, while the Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) will provide additional support for ground operations. The MEUs are typically deployed by sea, on board an ARG, which acts as a floating base.
