US Strikes in Nigeria’s Northwest Region Raise Concerns Over Lack of Strategic Logic and Uncertainty Surrounding Casualties
A recent series of strikes carried out by the United States against alleged Islamic State in the Lake (ISIL) targets in northwest Nigeria have been launched as part of a counter-terrorism operation. The strikes were presented in Washington as a decisive response to the threat posed by ISIL, with US President Donald Trump’s administration claiming it is taking action on what he describes as a “Christian genocide” in Nigeria.
The operation has sparked concerns that the strikes may not address the root cause of violence in the region. According to legal historian and research associate Femi Owolade, the initial strikes were launched in Sokoto, a region with a history of intense turmoil over the past decade. However, security concerns in this region are rooted in banditry, economic collapse, and competition for land.
The strikes appear to have focused on a relatively new ideological armed group called Lakurawa, although its profile and connection to ISIL are yet to be fully established. The strongest presence of ideological armed groups in northern Nigeria is held by Boko Haram and the ISIL-affiliate in West Africa Province (ISWAP), with their main activity centers located hundreds of kilometers from Sokoto.
The logic behind targeting the northwest region first remains unclear, and uncertainty surrounds casualties. There are no authoritative figures on the number of casualties, with some social media accounts claiming there were no human casualties or that most individuals and groups targeted were missed. The lack of transparent data on casualties from the US government risks deepening mistrust among communities already wary of foreign military involvement.
The timing of the strikes, which took place on Christmas Day, carries emotive and political significance for many Muslims in northern Nigeria. The location of the strikes, Sokoto, is also historically significant as the spiritual seat of the 19th-century Sokoto Caliphate, a center of Islamic authority and expansion revered by Nigerian Muslims.
