US President Trump Returns from China Visit, No Confirmation on Trade Deals or Taiwan
President Donald Trump departed China on Friday after a two-day summit with Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping. The US president stated that several business deals were struck between the US and China during his visit. According to Trump, these agreements are “fantastic” for both countries.
In a separate statement, the White House readout published on Thursday mentioned issues not addressed in the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ statements. Meanwhile, the Chinese Foreign Ministry released its own post-summit statement, which only partially overlaps with the US readout.
The two sides discussed various topics during their meeting, including trade agreements and economic cooperation. Trump told Fox News that China agreed to purchase 200 jets from Boeing, a move that would mark China’s first major purchase of US-made aircraft in nearly a decade. However, neither side has confirmed this deal or any other trade agreement.
The White House statement also mentioned the discussion on expanding market access for American businesses in China and increasing Chinese investment into US industries. Additionally, both sides agreed to increase purchases of US agricultural products.
During his visit, Trump discussed the ongoing conflict with Iran with Xi Jinping. The two leaders reportedly agreed that Iran should never have a nuclear weapon. However, their statements about this topic differ, with the White House stating that “both countries agreed” on this point and the Chinese Foreign Ministry saying that the conflict “should never have happened” and has no reason to continue.
The US president also met with US business leaders who accompanied him on his trip, including CEO Jensen Huang of Nvidia. However, there was no indication of any breakthrough deal regarding the sale of advanced AI chips to China.
No official confirmation has been provided by either side regarding the specifics of these agreements or discussions.
