US-Iran Tensions Rise Amid Naval Clash in Strait of Hormuz
A recent flare-up in fighting between the United States and Iran in the Strait of Hormuz has raised concerns about the stability of the ceasefire between the two nations. The exchange of fire occurred on Thursday, with both sides accusing each other of violating the truce.
According to reports, three US Navy destroyers were attacked while transiting through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway that handles a significant portion of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies. The incident was described by US President Donald Trump as an attack on American vessels, with no damage done to the ships.
Iran’s top joint military command disputed this account, claiming that the US had violated the ceasefire by targeting an Iranian oil tanker and another ship. Iran also accused the US of conducting air attacks on civilian areas in Qeshm Island and nearby coastal regions.
In response, Iranian forces struck US military vessels east of the strait and south of the port of Chabahar. The Iranian military claimed that their strikes inflicted significant damage, while the US Central Command reported no hits on its assets.
The clashes mark a sharp escalation in tensions since the ceasefire took effect on April 8. The two sides have occasionally exchanged gunfire since then, with Iran targeting Gulf countries, including the United Arab Emirates. On Friday, the UAE Ministry of Defence confirmed that Iranian missiles had been fired at its Fujairah emirate, causing an oil refinery to catch fire.
The situation remains unclear, with both sides seeking to negotiate a peace agreement. The US has proposed a deal to end the war, which began on February 28 with joint US-Israeli air strikes on Iran.
