US-Iran Talks End Without Agreement
A high-level meeting between the United States and Iran in Islamabad, Pakistan, has concluded without an agreement. Vice President JD Vance, who led the US delegation, stated that Iran did not accept Washington’s terms after 21 hours of negotiations.
According to Vance, the US seeks a “fundamental commitment” from Iran regarding its nuclear program. He emphasized the need for Tehran to confirm it will not pursue nuclear weapons and will not acquire the necessary tools to quickly achieve one.
Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Esmaeil Baghaei, clarified that no one had expected an agreement in a single session. Baghaei stated that Tehran was confident contacts with Pakistan and other regional countries would continue.
Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar expressed gratitude for the US and Iran’s efforts to achieve a ceasefire and urged both parties to maintain a positive spirit towards achieving durable peace and prosperity in the region.
The talks centered on advancing a ceasefire, which has been threatened by deep disagreements. The conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran began on February 28, resulting in significant damage to military and civilian areas, as well as a global energy crisis due to Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
