US and Iran have 10-day deadline for diplomatic agreement negotiations

US President Reiterates Call for Meaningful Deal with Iran

In a speech at the inaugural Board of Peace summit in Washington, DC, US President Donald Trump emphasized the need for a “meaningful deal” between the United States and Iran. The president stated that Tehran has approximately 10 days to reach an agreement with Washington or face further military strikes.

Trump referenced the joint Israeli-US strikes against Iran’s nuclear facilities in June of last year, citing it as a factor in the recent ceasefire in Gaza. He argued that without this attack, countries in the region may not have agreed to peace in the Middle East.

The US and Iran held a second round of indirect talks in Geneva on Wednesday, with Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs Abbas Araghchi stating that both sides made “good progress” in the negotiations. However, the US has continued to assemble military assets in the Gulf region, including two aircraft carriers and dozens of fighter jets.

Iran has proposed curbing its uranium enrichment and placing it under rigorous international inspection, but the Trump administration has stated it would oppose any Iranian enrichment. The US has also sought to limit Tehran’s missile arsenal, with Iranian officials ruling out concessions on this issue.

Trump’s diplomatic aides have had “very good meetings” with Iran’s representatives, according to the president. He reiterated that a meaningful deal is necessary, warning of “bad things happening” if an agreement is not reached.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei expressed defiance against Trump’s threats, stating that the US military presence in the region poses a greater threat than any warship. The tensions between Washington and Tehran have escalated since 2025, with periodic outbreaks of hostility and diplomatic efforts to ease the situation.
