US and Iran in talks over fragile ceasefire agreement

US-Iran Ceasefire Talks Stall Amid Disagreements

Efforts to reach an agreement between the US and Iran on a ceasefire have continued to falter. The latest proposal from Washington has been met with skepticism by Tehran, which has responded with a list of demands aimed at ending the conflict.

According to President Donald Trump, the Iranian response is “on life support” due to its perceived lack of substance. Trump dismissed the proposal as “stupid” and stated that the ceasefire is currently in a fragile state. Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Esmaeil Baghaei, has defended the country’s demands, describing them as “reasonable”.

The US proposal aimed at reopening negotiations was met with a response from Iran focused on ending the war on all fronts, including in Lebanon where US ally Israel is engaged in combat with Iranian-backed Hezbollah fighters. Tehran also demanded compensation for war damage, emphasized its sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, and called for an end to the US naval blockade.

The search for an agreement has been hindered by mistrust between the two sides. Iran’s officials have expressed concerns about the US, citing previous instances of aggression during negotiations. The global economy remains uncertain due to the ongoing conflict, with the Strait of Hormuz effectively shut down as a result of the US blockade.

Iran has demanded safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz and security in the region, including Lebanon. The US is currently blockading Iranian ports in an effort to cut off oil exports. Iran’s demands are seen by some as reasonable and generous, while others view them as maximalist and incompatible with Tehran’s sovereignty.
