US and Iran to Resume Mediation Talks in Latest Effort

US-Iran Diplomatic Talks Remain Uncertain Amid Ongoing Ceasefire Efforts

A renewed diplomatic push is underway to revive talks between the United States and Iran, following a fragile two-week ceasefire agreement that ended nearly six weeks of fighting in the US-Israeli war on Iran. The truce, set to expire on April 22, has created a brief window for negotiations to end the conflict, which has resulted in over 4,000 deaths across the Middle East.

Pakistan is playing a key role in facilitating these talks, with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif making stops in Saudi Arabia and Turkey to shore up support for the process. US President Donald Trump stated that the war is “very close to being over” and has indicated that a second round of talks could resume within days.

The first round of high-level talks took place in Islamabad on April 11 and 12, with Pakistan mediating between US Vice President JD Vance and senior Iranian officials. The discussions focused on several core issues, including Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions relief, frozen assets, and control of the Strait of Hormuz. The talks concluded without a resolution or memorandum of understanding.

Reports suggest that there are growing prospects for a second round of talks, which could take place in Islamabad or another location. However, details remain unclear, with Washington and Tehran having given an “in principle agreement” to extend the ceasefire but not formally agreeing to it. A US official stated that continued engagement between the two countries is underway to reach a deal.

World leaders have made differing statements about the ceasefire and the chance for further talks. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed hope for negotiations, while US President Trump suggested that talks could resume within days. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Sharif has also been rallying support for the process, making it unlikely that talks could be held in the timeframe previously suggested.

The thorniest issue remains Iran’s nuclear program, with the US and Israel pushing for complete restrictions on uranium enrichment.
