Iran Protests: Death Toll Figures Remain Uncertain Amid Ongoing Tensions
Protests in Iran, sparked by economic concerns in late December 2025, have escalated into a broader challenge to the country’s clerical leadership. The protests have been marked by clashes between demonstrators and security forces, resulting in deaths.
The Iranian government has reported varying death toll figures, with state TV putting the number at around 300. In contrast, US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) has reported a figure of 2,615 deaths. However, these numbers have been disputed by the Iranian government, which claims they are exaggerated.
US President Donald Trump’s comments on the situation have contributed to the uncertainty surrounding the death toll. Initially, he suggested that Washington could militarily intervene in Iran if there was a crackdown on protesters. This led to tensions with the Iranian government, which warned of retaliation.
On Wednesday night, Trump’s tone softened when he stated that he had received assurances from Iran that killings of protesters had stopped and executions of detained demonstrators would not go ahead. However, his earlier threats prompted Qatar to confirm that some personnel had been removed from the Al Udeid airbase, hosting US armed forces.
An ongoing internet blackout has made it difficult to track the actual number of deaths. Authorities have stated that over 100 members of the security forces have been killed in clashes with protesters. Opposition activists claim the toll is much higher, including more than 1,000 protesters.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi denied any plans to execute protesters during an interview with Fox News. He downplayed the death toll, stating it was an exaggeration and a misinformation campaign. Al Jazeera cannot independently verify any of the reported figures.
The situation remains uncertain, with multiple sources citing different death tolls. HRANA’s numbers are the most cited by news organizations worldwide.
