US President Suggests Charging Toll in Strait of Hormuz
Washington, D.C. - US President Donald Trump has stated that the United States may consider charging a toll for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway connecting the Gulf to the Indian Ocean.
According to Trump, the US is seeking a deal with Iran that would require direct military control over the strait. He reiterated that Iran has been militarily defeated and suggested that the US should charge tolls instead of allowing Iran to collect fees from ships. The US president stated that this approach would be more acceptable than letting Iran have control.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical waterway for global oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) trade, with approximately 20% of the world’s oil passing through it before the war. Trump has issued an ultimatum to Tehran, stating that any deal must include reopening the strait and ensuring free traffic of oil.
Iranian officials have also expressed interest in establishing new arrangements for managing the waterway after the conflict. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf wrote on X last month that the situation will not return to its pre-war status. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has called for drafting a new protocol for the Strait of Hormuz, which should be done between countries bordering the strait.
The White House has confirmed that Trump is considering asking Arab countries to pay for US expenses in the war on Iran.
