US Vice President JD Vance Departs for Pakistan to Engage in Talks with Iran
Vice President JD Vance has departed for Islamabad, Pakistan, where he will lead talks aimed at ending the ongoing conflict between the US and Iran. The negotiations are set to take place on Saturday.
In a brief statement to reporters as he boarded his plane, Vance expressed optimism about the outcome of the talks. He stated that President Donald Trump had provided him with “pretty clear guidelines” for the meeting.
Vance emphasized that the US is willing to engage in productive discussions if Iran is willing to negotiate in good faith. However, he also warned that if Iran attempts to play a confrontational role, the negotiating team will not be receptive.
The talks come at a time when tensions between the US and Iran have been high, with both sides offering conflicting messages on the agreed-upon terms of a ceasefire. The Trump administration has stated that it agrees to a 10-point plan put forward by Iran, but maintains that the points are different from an earlier proposal previously rejected.
Vance’s departure for Pakistan has sparked some speculation about the motivations behind his selection as the US delegation leader. Some observers have noted that Vance is viewed as less hawkish than many of Trump’s other top officials, and that he may be seen as a more suitable representative for the anti-interventionist wing of the “Make America Great Again” movement.
The format of the negotiations, including whether the US and Iranian officials will speak face to face or through intermediaries, has not been disclosed. The talks are expected to focus on key issues such as control over the Strait of Hormuz, the future of Iran’s nuclear programme, and the implications of Israel’s invasion of Lebanon.
Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi are expected to lead the Iranian delegation, although it is unclear if any representative from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) will attend.
