US does not dispute European assessment of Navalny poisoning incident

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated that the US will not dispute European findings regarding the poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny with a rare frog toxin. The UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden have accused Russia of killing Navalny in 2024 while he was imprisoned in a Siberian penal colony. Laboratory analysis of samples from his body found epibatidine, a toxin associated with South American dart frogs.
The five European nations claim that there is no innocent explanation for the presence of epibatidine and argue that Russia had the means, motive, and opportunity to administer the toxin while Navalny was imprisoned. They are calling on Russia to be held accountable under international conventions banning chemical and biological weapons.
In a joint statement, the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden stated that epibatidine is not found naturally in Russia and that Moscow had the means, motive, and opportunity to administer the toxin. The US has not joined the European statement but Rubio said that the decision did not signal disagreement with the findings.
The UK has warned that it is considering imposing further sanctions on Moscow. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper stated that the government would continue to look at coordinated action, including increasing sanctions on the Russian regime. Russia has denied any involvement in Navalny’s death and has previously stated that he died of natural causes.
