Pro-Israel Groups Spend Millions in Chicago Area Democratic Primaries
A set of primaries in Illinois on Tuesday marks an early test for the influence of pro-Israel groups in US politics amid declining support for Israel. The Chicago area Democratic primaries have seen significant spending by groups linked to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), with AIPAC itself investing $13.7 million in the contests.
According to a recent investigation, several shadow PACs and dark-money groups affiliated with AIPAC have endorsed candidates in Illinois, including those critical of Israeli policies. These groups have been active in supporting candidates who are seen as more favorable to Israel.
A spokesperson for the Justice Democrats has stated that AIPAC’s tactics demonstrate its efforts to maintain a strong presence in US politics despite declining public support for Israel. The group has been accused of using covert shell organizations to influence elections.
In one contested race, Kat Abughazaleh, a 26-year-old progressive activist, is running against Daniel Biss and Laura Fine for the open seat vacated by retiring Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky. Abughazaleh’s campaign has received support from the Justice Democrats, while Biss has backing from the liberal Zionist group J Street.
A recent survey suggests that Abughazaleh is a close second to Biss in the race, with Fine trailing behind. The outcome of the contest will be closely watched as it represents an early test for pro-Israel politics in the US.
It is worth noting that AIPAC has not commented on its involvement in the Illinois primaries or its tactics in supporting candidates.
