US Hotel Bookings Plummet During World Cup

US Hotel Bookings for World Cup Falling Short of Expectations

A recent survey conducted by the American Hotel and Lodging Association (AHLA) has revealed that hotel bookings in the US, associated with the upcoming FIFA World Cup, are not meeting industry expectations. The survey, which polled members from 11 US metropolitan areas hosting World Cup matches, found that 80% of respondents reported their hotel bookings were below initial forecasts.

The AHLA survey also identified several factors contributing to the low booking numbers, including visa barriers and broader geopolitical concerns. Approximately 65% of total respondents cited these issues as suppressing demand for hotel stays.

The US is co-hosting the tournament alongside Mexico and Canada, with the first match set to take place on June 11 in Mexico City and the final on July 19 in New Jersey. The survey’s findings suggest that fan groups are also expressing concerns about high ticket prices, price gouging on the secondary market, and transport costs associated with attending matches.

The AHLA President, Rosanna Maietta, noted that while forward indicators show potential for meaningful opportunity ahead, ensuring a welcoming experience for international travelers is crucial. The survey’s results will be released as part of the organisation’s “FIFA World Cup 2026 Hotel Outlook”.
