US President Trump Announces Tariff on Countries Trading with Iran
In a social media post on Monday, US President Donald Trump announced that countries engaging in trade with Iran will face a 25% tariff on any business done with the United States. The decision is effective immediately and applies to major economies such as Russia, China, Brazil, Turkey, Iraq, and the United Arab Emirates.
Trump stated that this measure is intended to enforce US demands for Iran to wind down its nuclear and military programs. He also reiterated his threat of further military strikes on the country if it fails to comply.
The announcement comes amid widespread antigovernment protests in Iran, which have resulted in reported deaths and injuries. The US has previously bombed Iranian nuclear facilities as part of a 12-day war initiated by Israel in June.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that Trump remains interested in diplomacy, if possible. However, the US President also warned that any violence against protesters could lead to a US strike.
The decision is expected to have significant implications for international trade and relations with Iran. The details of which countries will be affected by the tariff are not yet clear.
In related news, the US launched a military attack in Venezuela on Tuesday, resulting in the abduction of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. Human rights groups have warned that hundreds of people have been killed in Iran due to the ongoing protests, but an internet blackout has restricted access to information.
