US Imposes 25 Percent Tariffs on Cars and Trucks from EU

US President Announces New Tariffs on EU Automobiles

In a statement released on Friday, US President Donald Trump announced plans to increase tariffs on automobiles imported from the European Union (EU) to 25 percent. The move is set to take effect next week.

The announcement comes months after the US and EU signed a trade deal aimed at reducing tariffs on most goods traded between the two parties. Under the agreement, tariffs were initially set at 15 percent, lower than the 30 percent Trump had previously threatened.

Trump stated that he believes the EU is not complying with the terms of their trade deal, but did not provide further details. In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump claimed that if the EU produces cars and trucks in US plants, there will be no tariffs imposed.

The European Commission has rejected this claim, stating that it remains committed to a predictable and mutually beneficial relationship with the US. The commission’s spokesperson added that they will keep their options open to protect EU interests if Trump does not honor the existing deal.

Hildegard Mueller, president of Germany’s VDA auto association, urged both sides to honor the existing trade agreement and resolve the issue quickly. She warned that additional tariffs would have significant costs for US consumers.

The US-EU trade deal, known as the Turnberry Agreement, was signed in an effort to boost domestic industries. However, experts have noted that progress towards this goal has been limited, with critics arguing that tariff fees are being borne by US businesses and passed on to consumers.

As a result of a court order, the Trump administration is expected to begin issuing refunds to companies that paid tariffs directly. The estimated $166 billion in tariff refunds are part of an effort to mitigate the impact of the tariffs on affected businesses.
