US Imposes Sanctions on 14 Individuals and Entities Linked to Iran’s Arms Industry
The US Department of the Treasury announced sanctions against 14 individuals and entities on Tuesday, accusing them of assisting Iran in acquiring weapon components. The penalties are part of President Donald Trump’s efforts to increase financial pressure on Iran as he seeks concessions to end the ongoing conflict.
The sanctions target companies and people based in Iran, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates. They include Chabok FZCO, a Dubai-based firm accused of procuring US-origin aircraft components for Mahan Air, an Iranian airline. The Treasury Department also targeted Kamal Sabah Balkhkanlu, an Iranian money exchanger, and several individuals involved in procuring or transporting weapons.
The measures freeze the targets’ assets in the US and make it generally illegal for US citizens to do business with them. The sanctions come as talks between US and Iranian officials are scheduled for Wednesday in Pakistan, although Tehran has refused to commit to attending due to the ongoing US blockade against its ports.
US President Trump posted on his Truth Social platform that he would extend an existing ceasefire initially set to expire on Wednesday. However, the status of the talks remains uncertain, with Iranian officials casting doubt over their participation. The sanctions are part of a “maximum pressure campaign” against Iran, which has been ongoing since February 28.
The conflict between the US and Iran began after the US and Israel launched bombing operations in Iran on that date. Iran responded by closing the Strait of Hormuz and launching drone and missile attacks across the region. A two-week ceasefire was reached on April 8, but tensions remain high, with the US maintaining its naval blockade against Iranian ports.
