US Imposes Tariffs on Greenland Amid Tensions with European Allies

US President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose tariffs on European countries that have opposed his efforts to acquire Greenland, a move that has sparked an emergency meeting among EU leaders.

Trump stated on his Truth Social platform that he had subsidized Denmark and other EU countries by not charging them tariffs. He claimed that it was now time for Denmark to “give back” and warned that the National Security of the United States and the World at large were at stake.

Starting February 1, eight European countries - Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Finland - will be charged a 10% tariff on all their exports to the US. The tariff is set to increase to 25% on June 1, Trump said.

Trump’s push for acquiring Greenland has been ongoing since his first term in office. However, leaders in Denmark and Greenland have consistently stated that the island is not for sale.

In recent days, protests have taken place in Greenland against Trump’s wishes to acquire the territory. The US has maintained a permanent presence at the Pituffik Space Base in Greenland since World War II.

Greenland is strategically important due to its location between the Arctic Ocean and the North Atlantic Ocean. It is home to 56,000 residents, mostly Indigenous Inuit people, and is an EU-associated overseas territory with residents holding EU citizenship.

The US has sought to acquire Greenland for its natural resources, including minerals such as rare earth elements and metals. However, many Indigenous residents oppose large-scale mining, and the economy mainly depends on fishing.

An emergency meeting of all 27 EU members will convene on Sunday to discuss their response to Trump’s threat.
