US-Iran Negotiations Raise Concerns for Israels Security Situation

US President Donald Trump’s comments on negotiations with Iran have sparked confusion among Israeli analysts. In a video statement released on Monday, Trump stated that talks with Iran would continue despite his previous threats of strikes against the country’s energy infrastructure.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had previously framed himself as being at the forefront of the fight against Iran, stating that he had convinced the US to join what he described as an existential threat posed by Iran. However, Netanyahu also acknowledged that negotiations were taking place, citing the potential for leveraging “the mighty achievements obtained by [the Israeli military] and the US military” to achieve war goals.

Many in Israel are surprised by Trump’s comments, particularly given the ongoing conflict with Iran and deadly attacks on Israel in recent days. Former Israeli ambassador Alon Pinkas stated that if Trump had pushed for negotiations over Netanyahu’s objections, it may indicate that the US president is aware of Netanyahu’s misrepresentation of the war’s outcome.

Political scientist Ori Goldberg noted that Israel was not consulted about potential negotiations beforehand, which contradicts Netanyahu’s efforts to convince the US to entrench itself further in the conflict. Goldberg stated that Trump’s comments suggest a shift away from regime change and towards downgrading Iran’s military capabilities.

Netanyahu and his allies had placed significant importance on the support of US President Trump, who is set to run for re-election in 2024. However, Trump’s unpredictable behavior has led to periods of concern, including when he imposed a ceasefire on Israel in Gaza in late 2025 and ordered the cessation of attacks on Iran in June 2025.

Israeli analysts have differing opinions on the implications of Trump’s comments. Nimrod Flashenberg stated that Netanyahu was unlikely serious about regime change, as his actions had already led to significant civilian casualties within Iran. Flashenberg suggested that downgrading Iran’s military capabilities may be a more plausible goal for Netanyahu, which could lead to long-term US commitment to ensuring Iran’s reduced capabilities.
