US-Iran Tensions Remain High Despite Iranian Economic Challenges

US President Donald Trump’s Goal in Iran Remains Uncertain

Washington, DC - US President Donald Trump has stated his goal in Iran as “winning,” but analysts say that achieving this objective is unlikely due to the country’s vulnerable position. The Iranian government, led by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, is fighting for survival and may respond significantly to any attack.

In June, the US bombed Iran’s nuclear facilities, and in 2020, the assassination of top general Qassem Soleimani. However, the Iranian response was largely symbolic. A decapitation strike targeting high-ranking officials, including Khamenei, may not collapse the regime and could lead to further destabilization.

Analysts warn that a prolonged US war in Iran would be catastrophic and costly for Washington and the region. Barbara Slavin, distinguished fellow at the Stimson Center think tank, stated, “All the options are pretty terrible… It’s very hard to know what will take place if you do ‘A’ or ‘B.’ What are the after-effects going to be?”

Trump has repeatedly threatened to intervene militarily in Iran if protesters are killed by the authorities. However, since the start of the year, a wave of antigovernment demonstrations has swept the country, and the government has responded with a deadly crackdown. The death toll has risen into the thousands, according to activist groups.

Recently, Trump presented Tehran’s version of events, stating that armed demonstrators were targeting security forces. He also conveyed his “respect” and gratitude to Iran for cancelling scheduled executions. Despite this, experts warn that the crisis is not over, and the situation could change quickly.

The Pentagon has reportedly started to surge military assets to the Middle East, including an aircraft carrier strike group. Trump has shown willingness to deploy the US military to advance his policy goals. However, analysts say that Trump’s chances of a swift operational victory in Iran are slim.
