Humanitarian Aid Flotilla Arrives in Cuba Amid Ongoing Energy Blockade
A humanitarian aid flotilla has arrived in Havana, Cuba, carrying approximately 30 people and a range of essential goods, including food, medicine, solar panels, and bicycles. The “Nuestra America” or “Our America” convoy, which set out from Mexico last week, is part of an international effort to support the island nation amid its worsening economic and energy crises.
According to Cuban authorities, the US energy blockade has resulted in a nearly total ban on petroleum imports over the past three months. The blockade has been in place for decades, but recent restrictions have significantly impacted Cuba’s economy.
The flotilla is led by activists who describe the aid delivery as a “gesture of solidarity” aimed at drawing attention to the US energy blockade. Thiago Avila, an activist involved with the convoy, stated that the blockade is a form of economic warfare that disregards international law.
The convoy includes two other vessels en route to Cuba, and over 650 participants from 33 countries arrived on the island last weekend. The event was greeted by President Miguel Díaz-Canel.
Cuba’s Deputy Minister of Energy and Mines, Argelio Abad Vigo, has stated that the country has gone without access to vital supplies of diesel, fuel oil, petrol, jet fuel, and liquefied petroleum gas for three months due to the energy blockade. A recent poll found that 46% of people in the US disapprove of the energy blockade, while 28% support it.
The flotilla’s arrival marks a significant development in the ongoing humanitarian crisis faced by Cuba. The international community continues to monitor the situation and provide support to those affected.
