US midterm primary season begins amidst ongoing tensions with Iran

US Primaries Underway Amidst Regional Conflict

The 2026 primary season has commenced in the United States, with voters in Texas, North Carolina, and Arkansas casting ballots to determine which candidates will represent the major Republican and Democratic parties in the November midterm elections. This early window into voter sentiment is expected to provide insight into the US electorate ahead of the midterms.

The polls kicked off just four days after the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran, sparking a regional conflict that has resulted in hundreds of deaths, including at least 787 in Iran, six members of the US military, and several civilians across the Gulf. The war has also touched on several issues expected to dominate the US midterm season.

In Texas, Democrats are seeking to win a statewide office for the first time since 1994. The primary election will feature James Talarico, a Democratic hopeful who has pitched himself as a Christian liberal and centrist, against Ken Paxton, the Republican challenger who has closely aligned with Trump’s “America First” platform.

Talarico has taken a cautious approach to the conflict, while his opponent has defended Trump’s actions. Incumbent Senator John Cornyn has also expressed support for Trump’s justifications for the strike, citing concerns about Iran’s ballistic and nuclear capabilities.

In North Carolina, progressive candidate Nida Allam is connecting the war to her opponent’s past support from defence contractors and artificial intelligence super PACs, as well as her ties to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).

The outcome of Tuesday’s election will provide an early indication of the US electorate ahead of the midterm vote. The midterms will determine whether Republicans maintain their control over both the US Senate and the House of Representatives.
