US Central Command Announces Implementation of Blockade on Iranian Ports
A US military operation has been launched in the Persian Gulf, involving over 10,000 personnel and a significant naval presence. The blockade, which began at 10am Washington DC time on Monday, aims to restrict economic trade entering and leaving Iran by sea.
According to US Central Command (CENTCOM), the blockade is being enforced against vessels of all nations operating in coastal areas or ports within Iranian territory. CENTCOM Commander Admiral Brad Cooper stated that approximately 90% of Iran’s economy relies on international maritime trade, and that the operation has already resulted in a significant halt to economic activity.
In the first 24 hours since the blockade was implemented, six merchant ships were instructed to turn around and re-enter an Iranian port. Additionally, two oil tankers attempting to leave Iran’s Chabahar port were intercepted by a US Navy destroyer and ordered to alter course.
The operation is being led by CENTCOM, which is responsible for military operations in the Middle East. The blockade has been met with varying reactions from international stakeholders, including concerns about its impact on global oil markets.
US President Donald Trump announced the blockade following weekend talks between US and Iranian negotiators in Pakistan, which had resulted in a ceasefire announcement that halted attacks. Iran considers the blockade a violation of the ceasefire agreement, which may complicate the situation.
