US Launches Major Military Campaign Against Iran
On Saturday, the US launched a major military campaign against Iran, targeting various locations across the country as part of Operation Epic Fury. The operation has resulted in casualties, increased regional tensions, and instability in the region.
According to reports, at least 787 people have been killed in Iran, with six Americans reported dead in action and 18 service members injured. The US continues its strikes on Iran, which has led to counterattacks from Iran, targeting Israel and US assets in the region.
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that a projectile breached air defenses and struck a fortified US military position, resulting in casualties. The location of the facility was not disclosed, but reports indicated that the casualties occurred in Kuwait.
The US Constitution grants Congress the authority to declare war, but the president serves as commander-in-chief with the authority to respond to immediate threats. According to Professor David Schultz, this framework allows modern presidents to bypass formal declarations by labeling military actions as defensive or emergency measures.
In 1973, Congress passed the War Powers Resolution, which aims to limit unilateral presidential military action to 60 days. The president must also notify Congress within 48 hours of hostilities beginning. Trump notified Congress of the strikes, citing a threat from Iran that had become “untenable” despite efforts to reach a diplomatic solution.
The justification for the attack is attributed to several key reasons, including stopping Tehran’s nuclear program. The administration has stated that a primary goal is ensuring Iran cannot obtain a nuclear weapon. However, the duration and intensity of the conflict are being debated, with some arguing that it may be considered an “attack” if brief, but a “war” in practice if it continues for weeks or months.
The situation remains fluid, with ongoing strikes and counterattacks in the region. The full extent of the operation’s impact is still unfolding.
