US Military Spending Spanned Six Decades and Multiple Conflicts Worldwide

US-Led Wars Have Resulted in Significant Human and Financial Costs

A total of 832,000 US service members were deployed to Afghanistan from 2001 to 2021, during the longest war in US history. The war resulted in the deaths of 2,461 US soldiers and at least 20,000 wounded.

In addition to the human toll, the wars have also had significant financial costs. According to an analysis by the Cost of War Project at Brown University’s Watson Institute of International and Public Affairs, US-led wars since 2001 have directly caused the deaths of about 940,000 people across Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, and other post-9/11 conflict zones.

The most recent war on Iran has already resulted in significant losses. Since February 28, US-Israeli attacks on Iran have killed at least 3,375 people, according to Iran’s Ministry of Health. The US military has confirmed 13 combat-related deaths among its service members across the region, with more than 200 injuries.

The financial costs of the war are also substantial. According to the Pentagon, the Trump administration spent $11.3 billion during the first six days of the war, with an estimated $1 billion subsequently spent on the war every day until the April 8 ceasefire. However, some experts have questioned this figure, estimating that the actual cost may be higher.

The total cost of the US-led wars in Afghanistan and Iraq is estimated to be around $4.3 trillion. The Iran war has already surpassed $12.7 billion in its first six days, with estimates suggesting it could be one of the most expensive conflicts in recent history.

Veterans’ organizations have expressed concerns about the impact of these wars on veterans and the broader population. Naveed Shah, political director of Common Defense, a grassroots veteran-led organization based in Washington, DC, believes that the US must defend its national interests but also needs to be mindful of the long-term consequences of its actions.
