US President Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping discuss economic ties

US President Donald Trump Returns from China Trip Amid Uncertainty Over Key Issues

President Trump’s three-day visit to China concluded without a resolution on key issues such as Iran and Taiwan. The meeting between the US and Chinese leaders came six months after they agreed to pause the US-China trade war for a year.

During his trip, Trump met with Chinese President Xi Jinping, accompanied by a delegation of American CEOs. The White House stated that the two leaders discussed ways to enhance economic cooperation between their countries, including expanding market access for American businesses in China and increasing Chinese investment into US industries.

Notably absent from the statement was any mention of China’s export controls on rare earths, critical materials used across various sectors. Analyst William Yang noted that Trump’s remarks suggested he would likely focus on pragmatic areas of common interest with China, setting aside geopolitical concerns.

The meeting between the two leaders did not address several contentious issues, including Taiwan and Iran. Xi emphasized the importance of resolving these issues to maintain stability in the US-China relationship. However, neither the Chinese nor US readout mentioned whether Trump discussed these topics during their meeting.

A $14 billion arms deal for Taiwan is reportedly in the works, which would require Trump’s sign-off to move forward. Analysts are uncertain about whether Trump will heed Xi’s remarks on this matter. The two leaders also did not discuss the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway that has been closed since the US and Israel launched a war on Iran in February.

The meeting between Trump and Xi Jinping marked an effort to establish a new framework for US-China relations based on “constructive strategic stability”.
