US President Trump announces new tariffs amid criticism of Supreme Court ruling

US Supreme Court Blocks Trump’s Emergency Tariffs, President Vows to Find Alternative Means

The US Supreme Court has ruled 6-3 that President Donald Trump cannot use emergency powers to impose sweeping tariffs on imports from countries worldwide without the consent of Congress. In response, Trump announced plans to maintain and raise tariffs through alternative means.

Trump stated that he will impose a new 10% global tariff for 150 days, which would be in addition to existing tariffs on steel, aluminum, auto parts, and other sectors. The new tariff is set to take effect in approximately three days.

The court’s decision was seen as a significant setback for Trump’s efforts to impose sweeping tariffs without congressional approval. However, the president claimed that he has found a loophole to maintain and potentially increase the levies through existing laws and authorities.

Trump emphasized that the US Constitution grants him powers over trade, stating that “a president can actually charge more tariffs than I was charging in the past period of a year under the various tariffs authorities.” The president’s comments suggest that he plans to explore alternative legal avenues to maintain and raise tariffs despite the court’s ruling.
