US President Donald Trump Announces Suspension of Planned Bombing of Iran
In a sudden change of course, US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday evening that he would suspend his planned bombing of Iran for two weeks, pending Iran’s agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The decision was made after a conversation with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, who reportedly requested that Trump hold off the attack.
According to Trump’s statement on Truth Social, the suspension is contingent on Iran’s complete, immediate, and safe reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi confirmed a tentative agreement had been reached, stating that if attacks against Iran are halted, Iran’s Powerful Armed Forces will cease their defensive operations.
Araghchi also thanked Pakistan for its role in mediating the settlement. The ceasefire is set to last for two weeks, with the possibility of extension beyond this period if negotiations proceed favorably. Further talks are expected to take place in Islamabad over the coming weeks.
Trump’s announcement came after a tense standoff, during which he had threatened to unleash devastating attacks on Iran and its infrastructure. In a social media post earlier that day, Trump warned that “a whole civilization will die tonight” if Tehran did not comply with his demands.
The US president claimed victory over Iran, stating that the country had delivered a feasible ceasefire proposal. He also expressed optimism that past disagreements between the two nations had been resolved and that a long-term peace agreement was within reach.
