US President Trump confirms Iranian protests have ceased following killings

US President Donald Trump has stated that killings of protesters in Iran have stopped, according to sources he was informed about. This information comes after the US began withdrawing personnel from an airbase in Qatar on Wednesday. Trump described these sources as “very important” and said he would monitor the situation in Iran.

Trump’s comments signal a shift in his approach to the crisis, following earlier threats of military action against Iran. The US administration has received a statement from Iran, which was deemed “good” by Trump.

Experts say that Trump’s statements may be an attempt to avoid military intervention, but it is unclear whether this is the case. Sina Toossi, a senior fellow at the Center for International Policy, noted that Trump has a history of negotiating with Iran while threatening military action.

Barbara Slavin, a distinguished fellow at the Stimson Center, believes that Trump is likely torn about how to proceed with regards to Iran. She expects limited strikes by the US, which would allow Trump to claim he fulfilled his pledge to help the Iranian people without triggering further escalation.

The situation in Iran remains tense, with Iran warning of retaliation if the US intervenes. Countries in the region have issued advisories for protecting citizens, amid fears of a wider regional conflict. The commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has stated that Iran is ready to respond decisively to its enemies.
