US President Donald Trump Expresses Hope for Deal with Iran, Despite Mixed Signals
President Trump has indicated that talks between the US and Iran are progressing, stating that discussions have been “very good” and that a resolution is possible. However, Iranian officials have expressed skepticism about the prospects of an agreement.
On Wednesday, Trump told reporters at the White House that Iran wants to make a deal and that “if we get there, they can’t have nuclear weapons.” He also stated that it’s possible to reach an agreement before his upcoming trip to China next week. Additionally, Trump mentioned that if talks collapse, the US may resume military action.
Later in the day, Trump made comments on PBS, saying that he is optimistic about reaching an agreement and that “it’ll be over quickly.” However, Iranian officials have downplayed reports of a deal being close, citing that they are still reviewing Washington’s proposal.
The two sides remain at odds over several issues, including Iran’s nuclear program and control of the Strait of Hormuz. A proposed one-page memorandum to formally end the conflict has been reported by some sources, but Iranian officials have pushed back on these claims.
According to reports, the US proposal includes provisions such as lifting sanctions and releasing billions of dollars in frozen assets. However, Iranian officials have described the plan as “more of an American wish list than a reality.” The spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Tehran is still investigating the exchanged texts and has not yet provided its response.
The situation remains fluid, with both sides continuing to negotiate.
