US President Donald Trump expressed dissatisfaction with Iran’s latest peace proposal, which was sent via Pakistan. The proposal includes terms that Trump cannot agree to. Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Trump stated that negotiations have been stalled and he remains uncertain whether a deal will be reached.
A ceasefire in the conflict has continued for a third week, but talks in Islamabad, which began on April 11, failed to produce a basic framework for further discussions. The international community is eager for an agreement that would end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route.
Iran’s government submitted a new proposal to Pakistani mediators on Thursday, which was forwarded to the United States. Trump stated that he prefers to reach an agreement that prevents a return to war, but warned that resuming the conflict might be necessary if negotiations fail.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran is open to diplomacy if Washington alters its “threatening rhetoric” and “expansionist approach”. Iran has repeatedly warned that it is prepared for the war to resume, threatening to strike US interests in the region and energy infrastructure.
A Pakistani official confirmed receipt of Tehran’s latest peace proposal. Trump imposed a naval blockade of Iranian ports on April 13 as part of his efforts to pressure Tehran into returning to negotiations and accepting Washington’s terms.
The international community is watching closely for developments in the conflict, with both Iran and the US seeking an end to the war without appearing weak.
