US President Donald Trump made comments on Friday about Cuba, stating that the country is “in a big deal of trouble” and may be open to a “friendly takeover.” Trump was preparing to depart for Texas when he took questions from reporters about US relations with Cuba and other countries.
Trump suggested that Cuba’s government is seeking assistance from the US due to its economic struggles. He stated that the Cuban government has no money and is in dire need of help. Trump also mentioned that Secretary of State Marco Rubio is leading efforts to address the situation.
The US has imposed a trade embargo on Cuba since the 1960s, which has weakened the country’s economy. Tensions between the two countries have escalated since January 3, when Trump authorized a military operation in Venezuela. The incident resulted in the deaths of an estimated 32 Cuban soldiers and Venezuelan military personnel.
Trump has also taken steps to increase pressure on Cuba, including publicly speculating that its government is “ready to fall” and issuing an executive order threatening tariffs on countries that supply oil to the island. The UN has warned of a potential humanitarian crisis on Cuba due to the fuel blockade.
In his remarks, Trump reiterated his stance that Cuba is a “failing nation” in need of assistance. He stated that he believes a transition could be positive for the people affected by the current government.
