US President Trump proposes tariffs over Greenlands strategic military importance

US Delegation Meets with Danish and Greenlandic Leaders to Address Tensions

A bipartisan delegation of US lawmakers met with the leaders of Denmark and Greenland in Copenhagen on Friday, seeking to address tensions surrounding the Arctic island. The 11-member delegation, led by Democratic Senator Chris Coons, held meetings with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and her Greenlandic counterpart Jens-Frederik Nielsen, as well as Danish and Greenlandic parliamentarians.

US President Donald Trump has previously stated that he believes the US should control Greenland, a semiautonomous territory of NATO ally Denmark. He has also threatened to impose tariffs on countries that do not support this claim, citing national security concerns due to the island’s strategic location and mineral resources.

In an unrelated event at the White House, Trump mentioned that he had previously threatened European allies with tariffs on pharmaceuticals, stating that he may do the same for Greenland if his demands are not met. The foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland met with US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio earlier this week, but no agreement was reached.

European leaders have emphasized that only Denmark and Greenland can decide matters concerning the territory, while Denmark has increased its military presence in Greenland in cooperation with allies. A working group was established to address the issue, but details of the group’s purpose were not publicly disclosed.

The US delegation’s meetings aimed to provide assurances of congressional support for Denmark and Greenland, following Trump’s recent threats. The lawmakers expressed a desire to “lower the temperature” on the issue, which they believe is characterized by excessive rhetoric rather than concrete action.
