US President Trump Expresses Confidence in Strait of Hormuz Security
In a statement made during a meeting with Irish Taoiseach Michael Martin, US President Donald Trump stated that the United States does not require significant assistance in maintaining security in the Strait of Hormuz. The strait, located between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula, is a critical waterway for global oil transportation.
Trump’s comments came after he had previously appealed to countries with interests in the region to join a naval coalition aimed at ensuring unfettered passage through the strait. On Monday, Trump announced that several countries had agreed to participate in the coalition, although no specific details were provided.
When asked about the expected timeline for announcing the coalition members, Trump mentioned that some countries have expressed support from the Middle East region. However, it is unclear whether this refers to pre-existing US military assets or diplomatic efforts by Gulf countries.
Several European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, have rejected joining the coalition. Macron stated that France will not participate in operations related to the Strait of Hormuz due to its neutrality in the conflict. Similarly, other nations such as Germany, Italy, Spain, Australia, Poland, Japan, and South Korea have expressed hesitation or require further review before making a decision.
Trump also criticized the NATO alliance, citing US financial contributions to the bloc and support for Ukraine during the Russian invasion. The US president stated that he believes NATO is making a “mistake” by not providing more assistance to the United States.
